Toddler Tantrums or Pregnancy Pains?

Toddler Tantrums or Pregnancy Pains?

Navigating Toddler Tantrums and Pregnancy: A Parenting Journey

Parenting is a journey filled with countless joys and challenges, especially when you have a toddler and another baby on the way. In our latest podcast episode, we dive deep into the whirlwind of emotions, behaviors, and experiences that come with raising a toddler while being pregnant.

One of the most pressing issues we discuss is the change in our toddler's behavior since the pregnancy announcement. Yazmin, who is currently pregnant, shares her observations about how their 2.7-year-old daughter has become more aggressive and prone to tantrums. This change has sparked a debate: Are these outbursts typical toddler behavior, or are they influenced by the pregnancy?

We explore various aspects of this question, reflecting on how her aggression seems to have increased, particularly towards Yazmin and her grandmother. Yazmin notes that she often aims her hits towards her belly, which could be due to the height difference rather than intentional targeting. This observation leads us to consider whether these behaviors are just part of the natural progression of toddlerhood.

Tijani adds another layer to the discussion by highlighting how her behavior differs when he is around. He shares that she tends to be more rebellious and less responsive to discipline from her grandmother, even when she threatens to call him. This inconsistency in behavior further complicates the question of whether the changes are due to typical toddler development or the pregnancy.

To provide some context, we reminisce about her earlier behavior before the pregnancy. She was a sweet and gentle child, often apologizing if she hurt someone and rarely showing signs of aggression. However, as she approached the age of two and a half, her outbursts became more frequent and intense, leading us to consider various strategies to manage her behavior.

One effective approach we've implemented is the concept of logical consequences. For instance, if she refuses to clean her toy area, we take the toy away. This immediate and relevant consequence helps her understand the connection between her actions and the outcome.

Another strategy we discuss is providing choices to her, which gives her a sense of control and autonomy. Whether it's choosing a book for bedtime or picking out her outfit for the day, these small decisions help reduce the likelihood of tantrums and foster a sense of independence.

We also touch on the importance of maintaining a consistent routine, which provides her with a sense of security and predictability. From morning milk to bedtime prayers, our daily schedule helps her know what to expect and reduces anxiety.

As we navigate this complex parenting landscape, we invite you to weigh in on the debate. Do you think our daughter's behavior changes are due to typical toddler development, or are they influenced by Yazmin's pregnancy? We've created a poll on Spotify, and we encourage you to participate and share your thoughts. Feel free to leave a comment on this post below.
