Before You Travel With Your Baby: Know These!

Everything You Need To Know When Traveling With A Baby

Traveling with a baby can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. In our latest podcast episode, we are sharing the ins and outs of making your journey smoother when you have a little one in tow. Whether you’re planning your first flight or a long road trip, our personal experiences and practical tips will help you navigate the challenges and enjoy the journey.

One of the first things we discuss is the importance of planning. When traveling with a baby, every detail matters. From choosing the right flight times to packing the right essentials, preparation is key. For instance, we recommend planning flights around your baby’s nap times. This simple tip can make a world of difference. Our first flight with our daughter was planned around her nap time, and she slept through most of the flight, making it a breeze for us.

Another crucial aspect is understanding airline policies for infants. Did you know that infants under two years old can often fly for free as lap infants? This can save you a significant amount of money. However, it’s essential to include your baby in your reservation to avoid any issues at the airport. We learned this the hard way when we saw other parents being off-boarded for not including their babies in their reservations.

Packing the right essentials is another area where preparation pays off. We always make sure to bring a stroller, pack and play, and car seat, all of which can often be checked in for free. For the stroller, we prefer a lightweight umbrella stroller that’s easy to maneuver through airports. And don’t forget the car seat cover – it keeps the car seat clean and can even be used for extra storage (just be cautious as some airlines might not allow this).

Sleep routines are vital, especially for babies who are used to a specific schedule. We found that bringing a blackout tent for the pack and play works wonders. It creates a dark, cozy environment for the baby, allowing you to keep the lights on and continue with your evening while your baby sleeps soundly.

Feeding during takeoff and landing can help ease the baby’s discomfort from air pressure changes. Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, having a bottle ready can make a significant difference. We also recommend bringing a diaper bag and a breast pump, which do not count as personal items or carry-ons, making it easier to manage your luggage.

Road trips come with their own set of challenges. Frequent stops for diaper changes, feeding, and letting the baby stretch their legs are essential. We waited until our daughter was 18 months old before embarking on a long road trip, and it made a significant difference in her comfort and our sanity.

Lastly, flexibility and a positive mindset are crucial. Unexpected delays and changes are part of the travel experience, and being prepared for them can make all the difference. Don’t worry about stares from other passengers if your baby cries – it’s a natural part of traveling with a little one.

In conclusion, traveling with a baby requires careful planning and flexibility, but it’s entirely doable. With the right preparation and mindset, you can make your journey enjoyable for both you and your baby.
